Cherry Angioma in Spring Branch, Texas

Cherry Angioma

What Is a Cherry Angioma?

A cherry angioma is a benign skin growth that appears as a red or purple bump.

It’s made up of a cluster of dilated blood vessels and is most commonly found on the torso, shoulders, and arms, though they can appear anywhere on the body.

The spot is generally slightly raised and can be either smooth or textured. Size wise, a cherry angioma can be as small as a pinpoint or around 1/4 inch in diameter.

How Is a Cherry Angioma Diagnosed?

Usually a physical examination is all that’s needed to diagnose this condition. With a visual inspection, your provider will be able to identify cherry angiomas by looking for dome-shaped growths that are bright red or purple in color.

Your provider may also ask about your medical history, including underlying health conditions and if you have a family history of similar growths.

How Is It Treated?

Treatment usually isn’t required for cherry angiomas because they’re usually harmless and cause no symptoms. However, treatment may be needed if the growth bleeds or becomes bothersome.

IPL and other cosmetic treatments can be used to minimize the appearance of these growths.

Who Is at Risk?

There are many factors that increase the risk of developing cherry angioma, including:

  • Age (30 years and older)
  • Family history of the condition
  • Hormonal changes (such as pregnancy)
  • Obesity
  • Fair skin
  • Exposure to certain toxins and chemicals
  • Excessive sun exposure
